I'd just finished a Beethoven quartet rehearsal with Perlman, Leonard and Trampler and had been overbearing, as I had a tendency to be, by insisting on all the dots, dashes... this was my way of trying to fit in. So as we were leaving Walter asked if I wanted a ride back to town and I said sure. As we were driving I told him about a concert he had played years before in Nashville of a work by Larry Austin called "Walter" which had him play viola in one room and then viola da gamba in another. Then I told him that before he played there was a young man who performed a piece for violin and electronics by Gil Trythall. Afterwards you and the violinist walked outside and you told him that he should consider going to Juilliard. I looked at Walter and I said, "well I did"!
