Okay, so what exactly am I doing here? Well, I'm trying to get my finger to an imaginary string as quickly as possible and take it away as quickly as possible. This is something that Ms. DeLay showed me years ago. When she did it, the string was very hot. And so if you stayed too long, well, you really felt it. So the goal was to get it as quickly as you could get it there and pull it away. Here, let's look at it with my violin. Do you see what I'm doing? I'm going to the string and just barely touching it and removing my finger as quickly as possible. It cocks, I launch it, and then I release it. All of this is to help me to understand better how to get to the string and to pull my finger away.
