Well, a Julliard pianist was organizing a concerto reading and asked me to play in the orchestra. I said, yes, but only if I could conduct one of the concertos. Do you conduct? Yes. A friend said that I was wonderful, so he asked me to conduct his Brahms. When he left, we cracked up, as I had never, ever conducted.

A month passed, and the pianist asked to meet. This was getting serious. So, I called my conductor friend, Vicky, who gave me three lessons. Well, the evening came and I started conducting. I loved it. Miss Delay was there, so afterwards I went up to her and asked what she thought. And she said, "Billy, can you be mean? You know, conductors, they have to be mean." I just walked away.
